York, PA based-Stewart & Tate Construction has commenced work on an anaerobic digestion (AD) facility in Jessup, MD, for Bioenergy Devco. This AD facility will transform organic waste once destined for incineration or already crowded landfills into renewable gas and a soil additive using microorganisms. There are a number of benefits of anaerobic digestion, such as the reduction of the amount of waste traditionally held in landfills by up to 40 percent, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and creation of renewable energy by converting the waste into natural gas. The facility will have capacity to process 110,000 tons of waste per year and will be co-located with the Maryland Food Center Authority, a major food distribution hub.
The Sitework Division of Stewart & Tate commenced work by mass grading the site and installing more than one-half of the storm drainage. Next, excavation for tanks began. Some of the dirt from the excavation will go to stockpiles to be used later as backfill, and the remaining will be hauled off site as excess material. After excavation, the remaining storm drainage, sanitary sewer and water mains will be installed. Curbs, paving and bio-retention areas will then be completed as the building schedule allows.
After the initial sitework referenced above is finished, Stewart & Tate Construction will commence with construction of below-grade tanks and pits, ground improvement work for foundation bearing, and the base slabs for the fermenter tanks. Erection of a pre-engineered metal building will follow foundations, with all applicable process piping and mechanicals to support the facility’s operation.
This project is slated for a completion date of August 2021.
