In what may be the timeliest completion of a construction project in recent history, a ribbon-cutting took place on June 17, 2021, for the newly completed Sheppard Pratt Baltimore / Washington Behavioral Health Hospital in Elkridge, MD. Lewis Contractors was honored to construct what is only the second newly-completed hospital in the state in over 30 years, and the only one to be solely focused on mental health. Given the extreme need for a focus on mental health following the more than year-long COVID-19 pandemic, this new hospital will provide much needed care for patients from throughout the state, across the nation and even from abroad.
Sheppard Pratt is the largest private, nonprofit provider of mental health, substance use, developmental disability, special education, and social services in the country. A nationwide resource, Sheppard Pratt provides services across a comprehensive continuum of care, spanning both hospital- and community-based resources. Since its founding in 1853, Sheppard Pratt has been innovating the field through research, best practice implementation, and a focus on improving the quality of mental health care on a global level. This new, world class 158,000 SF state-of-the-art behavioral health hospital is the first of several planned buildings on Sheppard Pratt’s 40-acre Elkridge campus and provides in-patient, partial hospital, emergency and crisis services all across the spectrum of those needs.
This new hospital is programmed for the relocation of the Ellicott City campus and substantially adds capacity to their services for both the pediatric and geriatric patient communities. Its emergency services have been increased, the sensitive in-patient 85-bed design provides each patient with views of the natural surroundings, and the single day occupancy has been increased. The enclosed multi-level landscaped courtyard and two enclosed basketball courts provide new sheltered recreation areas for patients and their family members. Similarly important, the Elkridge location is easily accessed from Interstate 95 and BWI airport, providing an added benefit to patients traveling this major artery, as well as those in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area.
Since its founding, the mission of Sheppard Pratt has been “to improve the quality of life of individuals and families by compassionately serving their mental health, addiction, special education, and community support needs,” and this landmark change to medicine surely meets Sheppard Pratt President and CE0, Dr. Harsh K. Trivedi’s vision and the values of simplicity, peace, integrity, and community first established by its founders. For Lewis Contractors it has been our honor to bring this world class facility to reality.
